Nicolas Vaagen is leveraging 3D printing technology to enhance the quality of life for individuals with disabilities. Following a car accident in 2020 that resulted in a brain injury, Vaagen, a former computer science student, now faces limitations in movement and memory.
During his recovery, Vaagen encountered challenges in performing everyday tasks like trimming nails and reading books, tasks that many take for granted. He noticed a lack of easily accessible tools tailored to individuals with disabilities, prompting his desire to create solutions.
Inspired by Makers Making Change, a program by the Neil Squire Society focused on utilizing technology for disability assistance, Vaagen applied for and received a grant to acquire a 3D printer. Initially relying on provided schematics, he printed a stand for nail clippers, enhancing his independence and empowering him to complete tasks unaided.
Motivated to expand his creations, Vaagen taught himself 3D modeling and began designing custom tools. Despite initial setbacks, he successfully produced various aids, such as a Nintendo Switch adapter for one-handed use and card holders for individuals with limited dexterity.
Emphasizing the importance of such tools for enhancing daily activities, Vaagen stressed the significance of inclusivity and enjoyment regardless of physical abilities. His current endeavor involves developing a doorknob adapter to aid a woman with arthritis in gripping standard doorknobs.
Data from a 2022 Statistics Canada survey revealed that nearly a third of individuals with disabilities face unmet needs in daily activities. Makers Making Change aims to address this gap through community-driven assistive technology crafted by volunteer makers.
Seeking to assist more individuals in Saskatchewan, Vaagen invites collaboration and outreach for new projects.
