A fatal incident occurred in downtown Guelph when a 70-year-old woman driving an SUV collided with the rear of a plaza, resulting in a fire. The tragic event unfolded on Friday morning at Norfolk Street and Commercial Street, home to various businesses such as Market Fresh, Simply Wonderful Toys, Wine Rack, and Janus Books.
Emergency services responded to reports of the SUV veering off the road, striking the building, and catching fire around 10 a.m. Quick action by staff members managed to extinguish the flames, although the premises had to be temporarily evacuated due to smoke concerns, according to police statements.
The woman was promptly rescued from the vehicle and rushed to the hospital, but unfortunately, she later succumbed to her injuries. Authorities are currently investigating the circumstances surrounding the collision, seeking to determine the cause of the tragic accident.
