“Nepal Protests Spark Chaos and Political Turmoil”

Published:

Protests erupted in Nepal following the government’s temporary ban on social media, resulting in violent clashes and widespread unrest. Demonstrators set ablaze government buildings and targeted politicians’ residences, leading to escalating tensions and condemnation of the political establishment. The prime minister’s resignation failed to quell the turmoil, with tens of thousands of protesters continuing to occupy the streets, disrupting normalcy and sparking chaos.

The unrest initially stemmed from the blocking of popular social media platforms, triggering a violent crackdown by security forces that resulted in casualties and injuries. Despite the ban being lifted subsequently, public outrage persisted fueled by grievances over perceived corruption and lack of accountability among the ruling elite in the strategically located nation between China and India.

Amid the escalating protests, Prime Minister Khadga Prasad Oli stepped down, with uncertainty surrounding the transition of power and the formation of a new government. President Ramchandra Paudel appealed for dialogue to defuse the crisis and prevent further escalation, as jubilant youths celebrated the prime minister’s resignation outside the parliament complex.

The demonstrations, labeled as protests by the younger generation, highlighted deep-seated frustrations over issues such as high youth unemployment and nepotism within the political elite. The youth, disillusioned by the lavish lifestyles of political leaders’ families contrasted with their own struggles, demanded systemic reforms and accountability.

The social media ban, widely condemned by rights groups and the international community, was seen as an attempt to stifle freedom of expression and dissent. The government’s move to regulate online platforms faced backlash for perceived censorship and authoritarian tendencies, raising concerns about the erosion of democratic values and fundamental rights in Nepal.
