Principal’s Pre-Back-to-School Jitters: An Inside Look

Published:

As the school year approaches, restlessness grips me the night before. While some may envision principals as composed figures of authority, I share the same pre-back-to-school jitters as students and parents.

The anticipation of the upcoming day weighs heavily on my mind as I fret over ensuring all necessary tasks are completed before students arrive. Sleep often eludes me, leaving me tossing and turning, consumed by thoughts of overlooked details and revised communications.

Despite the late nights and early morning awakenings filled with anxiety, fueled by coffee and nerves, I am driven to be the first at the school, unlocking the doors to a space permeated with the familiar scent of freshly waxed floors and rows of empty chairs awaiting their occupants.

A school symbolizes a haven for children’s emotional and intellectual nourishment, a place fostering growth and learning. The responsibility of shaping young minds fills me with both joy and nervous excitement, evoking memories of my own schooling experiences.

Growing up in a lower-income Toronto neighborhood, I encountered educational disparities firsthand. Misjudged and misplaced in a special education class in Grade 8, solely based on assumptions about my abilities fueled by my immigrant background, I felt overlooked and misunderstood. Transitioning to a more affluent school in Grade 9, where I was suddenly placed in advanced classes, highlighted the systemic biases that hindered student potential based on socio-economic backgrounds.

The lack of representation further compounded my struggles, with minimal racial diversity among teachers throughout my schooling. Yearning for teachers who mirrored my identity, I found myself longing for a curriculum that acknowledged and celebrated diverse contributions to Canadian society.

My journey as a student and later as a teacher underscored the pervasive bias within the education system, emphasizing the importance of genuine equity beyond superficial representation. Now, as a principal, I strive to create a welcoming environment for all students by championing inclusive practices and supporting diverse educators who affirm students’ identities.

On the first day of school, I stand ready to greet families, offering reassurance and support as they entrust their loved ones to our care. The bustling hallways echo with laughter and promise, marking the beginning of another school year filled with endless possibilities.

After more than two decades in education, the persistent butterflies in my stomach serve as a reminder of the significance of our work and the shared responsibility to foster a sense of belonging for all students.

The back-to-school routine remains a constant in my career, reminding me that the nerves and excitement are intrinsic to the profound impact education has on shaping young lives and fostering a sense of belonging and purpose for all.
