Residents evacuated due to the Long Lake wildfire in Nova Scotia’s Annapolis Valley can return home starting Wednesday. The wildfire, covering 8,468 hectares, remains uncontrolled after burning for three weeks. Specific areas like Trout Lake, Zwickers, East Lakes, and certain roads will allow residents to return at designated times.
Dustin Enslow, deputy warden of Annapolis County, emphasized the ongoing fire threat despite the return, with 360 homes cleared for reentry while 145 addresses remain evacuated. Jim Rudderham, from the Department of Natural Resources, urged preparedness to leave if necessary while permitting the return. Residents must carry identification listing their address and keep a 72-hour emergency kit ready.
Highway 10 will reopen to the public later in the day. Recent weekend rainfall, although limited, is insufficient, and significant rain is still needed to aid fire containment efforts.
