Prime Minister Mark Carney has named Jason Jacques as the interim parliamentary budget officer for a six-month term. Jacques, currently a director general at the office, will take over from Yves Giroux, whose term as head of Parliament’s budgetary watchdog office ends today.
Giroux expressed uncertainty about his successor as his seven-year mandate neared its conclusion. Jacques brings extensive public sector experience from roles at the Privy Council Office, Finance Canada, the Treasury Board Secretariat, and the Bank of Canada.
The parliamentary budget officer serves as an independent economic and financial analyst for the Senate and House of Commons. Jacques will face his initial major responsibility as the federal government prepares to present a budget this autumn.
