“Xi Jinping and Modi Pledge Border Resolution at Tianjin Summit”

Published:

Chinese President Xi Jinping and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi have affirmed their commitment to resolving border disputes and enhancing cooperation. This comes as they gathered for a regional summit in Tianjin. Modi’s visit marks his first to China since tensions escalated following deadly clashes between Chinese and Indian troops in 2020. The visit coincides with India’s entry into the Shanghai Cooperation Organization, a regional entity established by China focusing on politics, economics, and security.

In his opening statements, Modi noted a positive shift in relations with China, highlighting a peaceful border environment post disengagement. Xi expressed hope that the Tianjin summit would further enhance and support the steady, healthy, and stable growth of bilateral ties. Emphasizing that the border issue should not overshadow the overall China-India relationship, Xi underscored the importance of prioritizing economic advancement for both nations.

Xi stressed that as long as they maintain their commitment to being partners rather than adversaries and offering development opportunities instead of threats, China-India relations will prosper and progress steadily. Russian President Vladimir Putin, also present in Tianjin, is scheduled to meet with both leaders in the coming days.

Earlier in August, top Chinese diplomat Wang Yi visited New Delhi, signaling a thaw in relations. Both sides agreed to restart border discussions and resume the issuance of visas and direct flights. Despite the recent imposition of 50% tariffs on India by U.S. President Donald Trump over Russian oil purchases, India’s efforts to rebuild ties with China had been underway.

Throughout this year, China and India have intensified official exchanges and explored ways to ease trade restrictions and facilitate cross-border movement. For instance, in June, Beijing allowed Indian pilgrims to visit sacred sites in Tibet.
