Inscribed above the arched entrance of Winnipeg’s inaugural public library is the phrase “Free to All.” Despite its closure for the past 11 years, the historic Carnegie Library on William Street is now gearing up for a fresh start as it celebrates its 120th anniversary.

Executive Director of Heritage Winnipeg, Cindy Tugwell, expressed optimism about the upcoming $22.8 million renovation of the 37,350-square-foot building. The revitalization will transform it into a modern archives facility, complete with a climate-controlled vault, to safeguard and showcase Winnipeg’s rich historical records. Construction is scheduled to commence later this fall, with a planned reopening in 2027.

Tugwell highlighted the significance of housing the archives in such a grand heritage building, emphasizing the city’s commitment to preserving its history. She emphasized the value of education in understanding the past to shape a better future.

The library’s origins trace back to 1901 when American philanthropist Andrew Carnegie provided funding at the request of provincial librarian John P. Robertson. The library’s establishment was a response to Winnipeg’s growing demand for books, leading to its official opening in 1905.

Throughout its history, the Carnegie Library underwent expansions and transitions, eventually becoming the city’s primary library until 1977. Despite facing challenges such as closure and relocation of its archives, the library remains a pivotal part of Winnipeg’s cultural heritage.

The decision to renovate the Carnegie Library was reinforced by a 2020 city report, which considered the building’s historical significance and public feedback. The project aims to provide enhanced research space, public programming opportunities, and improved preservation measures for the valuable archival materials.

The revitalization of the Carnegie Library symbolizes a commitment to public access to knowledge and the preservation of Winnipeg’s unique stories and history. The project represents an investment in safeguarding tangible historical artifacts and ensuring their accessibility for generations to come.
