“Canada Post Urged to Submit New Proposal Amid Union Strike”

Published:

Jobs Minister Patty Hajdu has called on Canada Post to swiftly present a new proposal to the striking postal workers’ union. The Canadian Union of Postal Workers (CUPW) initiated strike action following Ottawa’s announcement of significant operational changes at the Crown corporation to address its financial challenges.

These changes entail discontinuing daily mail delivery, shuttering select rural post offices, and transitioning most Canadian households to community mailboxes – measures the union perceives as a direct assault on workers. In an interview with The Canadian Press, Minister Hajdu mentioned the possibility of federal intervention to resolve the ongoing strike but emphasized the importance of Canada Post promptly offering a new proposal and the union seriously considering any potential agreements.

Hajdu stressed the critical need for both parties to collaborate after nearly two years of negotiations to map out a new strategy for the struggling postal service. She emphasized the urgency of Canada Post and the union working together to revamp Canada Post into a sustainable Crown corporation.

Canada Post was set to present a new offer on Friday, but is revising its proposal in light of the government’s recent announcements. According to Canada Post spokesperson Jon Hamilton, there remains a substantial disparity between the corporation and the union. The revised offer will align with the government’s reforms, aimed at stabilizing the postal service and lessening the financial burden on taxpayers.

The financial outlook for Canada Post is grim, with reported daily losses exceeding $10 million during the summer due to prolonged labor unrest. The postal service has relied on federal assistance to remain operational in recent years. An industrial inquiry commission report released earlier this year indicated that the Crown corporation was essentially insolvent, prompting the federal government to adopt a series of measures to sustain Canada Post in its recent announcement.

CUPW negotiator Jim Gallant acknowledged Canada Post’s financial challenges but criticized the government’s proposed solutions as extreme. The union aims to leverage the nationwide strike to compel the government to reconsider its overhaul of Canada Post and conduct a public mandate review. The Canadian Federation of Independent Business warned of the strike’s significant impact on small enterprises reliant on Canada Post’s services but supported the government’s reform initiatives.

Minister Hajdu indicated that the government is open to intervening to resolve the strike if necessary.
