Mystikal, the rapper known as Michael Lawrence Tyler, has been sentenced to 20 years in prison for raping a woman at his Louisiana residence in 2022. His guilty plea to third-degree rape came with a maximum sentence cap of two decades, a reduction from the potential life imprisonment associated with first-degree rape charges.
Before his sentencing, Mystikal attempted to retract his guilty plea, citing insufficient time to consider the repercussions. The victim, who detailed the assault in court, urged the judge to impose the harshest penalty, recounting how Mystikal physically assaulted her and committed the rape at his Prairieville home, located approximately 29 kilometers from Baton Rouge.
In response to the victim’s plea for the maximum sentence, Mystikal acknowledged the severity of his actions, expressing readiness to accept the consequences. Despite the gravity of the situation, the rapper’s legal representative has not provided any comments on the matter.
Since his 2022 arrest, Mystikal has been detained without bond at the Ascension Parish Jail. The Louisiana artist gained national prominence in the 1990s and achieved success with his 2000 hit track “Shake Ya A**,” which garnered a Grammy nomination for best rap solo performance.
Mystikal’s legal troubles are not new, as in 2003, he pleaded guilty to sexual battery and served a six-year prison term. During the same year, he received Grammy nominations for best rap album for “Tarantula” and best male rap solo performance for his single “Bouncin’ Back (Bumpin’ Me Against The Wall).”
