Singer Bonnie Tyler has come out of a coma and is currently in critical condition in the intensive care unit, according to an update on her official website. The 75-year-old Grammy-nominated pop star, known for her distinctive voice, was admitted to a hospital in Faro, Portugal, last month for urgent intestinal surgery, after which she was placed in a medically induced coma.
While she is no longer in a coma, her recovery is progressing slowly, as stated in the update released on Monday. Although her doctors are optimistic about her eventual recovery, they emphasize that it will be a gradual process. Tyler’s upcoming performances scheduled until August have been either canceled or rescheduled, but there is hope that her shows in the autumn will proceed as planned.
Famous for her iconic 1980s power ballad “Total Eclipse of the Heart,” Tyler has garnered a new audience each time a solar or lunar eclipse occurs. Originally from Wales, she first gained recognition with the hit song “It’s a Heartache” in 1978 before solidifying her place in music history with “Total Eclipse of the Heart,” written by Jim Steinman, known for his work with Meat Loaf.
