Ontario’s provincial government has announced plans to eliminate obstacles for workers in regulated professions, enhancing their ability to seek employment nationwide. According to the Labour Day declaration, Ontario has established agreements with 10 provinces and territories to dismantle barriers, enabling workers to seek employment in over 50 high-demand professions such as engineers, architects, and electricians.
These agreements will not only allow workers in these fields from Ontario to find employment in other provinces but also facilitate workers from other regions to work in Ontario. Starting from January 1, 2026, individuals in regulated professions can commence work within 10 days of their credentials being verified by the regulatory body, a significant improvement from the current process that involves lengthy waiting periods for certification.
The province highlighted that the new agreements feature reciprocal measures, simplifying the process for Ontario-based workers to relocate and work in other parts of the country. Finance Minister Peter Bethlenfalvy emphasized the importance of this shift in labor mobility, stating that it will expedite the hiring process for workers across Canada and attract local talent essential for advancing national projects and enhancing the country’s competitiveness within the G7.
