Last week, Jeff Gerstmann chuckled in disbelief at the news that the late iconic rapper Tupac Shakur would be digitally featured in an upcoming video game. The announcement during Summer Game Fest sparked shock and confusion among gamers and influencers. The game, titled “Stranger Than Heaven,” is a prequel to the popular “Like a Dragon” series developed by Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio, a Sega-owned Japanese company. The decision to include Tupac in the game has raised skepticism about the studio’s creative choices and the handling of the rapper’s legacy.
Tupac, portrayed as a character named Amaru after his real middle name, will be part of the game. The developers emphasized their respectful approach to integrating Tupac into the game, confirming that his character design was based on archival materials without the use of AI. Snoop Dogg, another prominent figure in the game, expressed close collaboration with Tupac’s estate on the project.
The game’s inclusion of Tupac has stirred discussions about the estate’s management and the commercialization of the rapper’s image. Gerstmann expressed concerns about potential overexposure of Tupac’s likeness, which could diminish the artist’s legacy. The estate, currently overseen by music executive Tom Whalley, has faced controversies in the past, including legal disputes over financial matters and the sale of NFTs featuring Tupac’s images.
Lex Luddy, a games journalist, criticized the studio’s decision, suggesting that featuring Tupac in a game like “Stranger Than Heaven” may not align well with its themes of gangland crime. Jeffrey Ogbar, a history professor, highlighted the complexities of representing deceased public figures in new media formats, acknowledging the evolving nature of such representations.
Despite the controversies surrounding Tupac’s inclusion, the game has garnered attention for its unique gameplay mechanics, particularly in hand-to-hand combat. Gerstmann praised the game’s innovative approach and hoped that the focus would shift from the Tupac controversy to the game’s actual content.
