New York City voters have demonstrated significant interest and involvement in the upcoming mayoral election set for Tuesday. The city witnessed a record-breaking voter turnout during the nine-day early, in-person voting period, with over 735,000 votes cast. This figure surpasses the number of ballots cast in the previous 2021 election, the only other mayoral race to offer early voting.
Given New York City’s status as the largest city in the United States, with a population of approximately 8.5 million and being a key financial hub, the mayoral race has attracted national attention. Recent polls indicate that the city is poised to elect its first Muslim mayor, a Democrat, which led former U.S. President Donald Trump to threaten withholding federal funds from New York.
The leading candidates in the race include Democrat Zohran Mamdani, Republican Curtis Sliwa, and former New York governor Andrew Cuomo, who is running as an Independent. Mamdani, a 34-year-old state assemblyman, emerged victorious over Cuomo in the Democratic primary, prompting Cuomo to switch to an Independent candidacy.
Mamdani, who identifies as a democratic socialist, has centered his campaign on addressing the cost of living and enhancing affordability in the city. His proposed policies involve raising taxes on the wealthiest residents, increasing the corporate tax, stabilizing apartment rental rates, and expanding publicly subsidized housing.
Cuomo, aged 67, seeks a return to political office after resigning as governor amid allegations of sexual harassment four years ago. Despite his Democratic background, Cuomo has courted Republican voters by contrasting Mamdani’s potential administration with left-wing governments in Latin America. He emphasizes his ability to defeat Mamdani and has pledged to bolster law enforcement and curb crime rates.
Sliwa, a 71-year-old Republican candidate, trails behind the two frontrunners in the race. He previously ran unopposed in the Republican primary and is campaigning for the mayoral position for the second time after a substantial defeat in the 2021 election to Eric Adams. Sliwa, known for his activism in New York City and founding the Guardian Angels organization, advocates for improving quality of life, particularly in the city’s outer boroughs, and prioritizing public safety. He also positions himself as an anti-Trump Republican.
The current mayor, Adams, elected as a Democrat four years ago and intending to seek re-election as an Independent, withdrew from the race in September due to poor polling performance. Despite withdrawing, Adams’s name remains on the ballot.
Polls across New York City’s five boroughs are scheduled to open at 6 a.m. ET and close at 9 p.m. ET. The election results are anticipated to be promptly announced, with the 2021 election winner, Adams, declared the victor approximately 10 minutes after polls closed. The outcome of this year’s election may be more closely contested, as Mamdani has led the race, though Cuomo has recently narrowed the gap.
Throughout the campaign, Trump has issued threats against Mamdani, indicating intentions to arrest him, deport him, and potentially intervene in city affairs if Mamdani wins. Trump’s opposition extends to Sliwa as well, urging New Yorkers not to vote for him to prevent aiding Mamdani’s chances.
Mamdani’s potential victory carries implications for the Democratic Party, with some party members endorsing him while others express concerns about potential Republican efforts to associate him with socialism to provoke fear.
