A man lost his life in a shooting involving the police in Moncton on Saturday, as per a statement from the RCMP. The RCMP responded to a call about a man with a firearm robbing a business on Mountain Road at approximately 2 p.m. The man fled on foot and sought refuge in a nearby residence, where he fired shots from inside. Law enforcement contained the area during the gunfire.
According to the Serious Incident Response Team (SIRT), an independent police oversight body, initial reports suggest that the man had stolen a vehicle before entering the residence. The SIRT report reveals that the man proceeded to set fire to the residence and a parked car, then fled on foot once more and attempted to break into another home.
During the incident, a police officer discharged their firearm at the man, resulting in his death at the scene. The New Brunswick RCMP have handed over the case to SIRT for further investigation.
