Erlinda Tan, a Filipina Canadian residing in Vancouver and an avid Edmonton Oilers supporter, recounts her journey into the world of ice hockey. Her fascination with the sport began during the 2010 Winter Olympics when Sidney Crosby clinched a dramatic victory for Canada with his golden goal against the U.S. Witnessing the nation’s jubilation following the win, Erlinda was struck by how hockey could unify an entire country.
Having recently moved from the Philippines to Canada, Erlinda was intrigued by the impact of the sport on Canadian culture. Attending her first live hockey game in 2014, a match between the Edmonton Oilers and Anaheim Ducks, she was captivated by the energy of the crowd at Rexall Place. This experience marked the beginning of her deepening connection to hockey and her new home in Edmonton.
As Erlinda embraced the hockey culture in Edmonton, she discovered the significance of the sport in the city’s fabric. From workplace conversations revolving around the Oilers to learning about the intense rivalry in the “Battle of Alberta,” hockey’s influence on daily life became evident to her. She delved into the sport further by watching games on TV and even decorating her kitchen with Oilers memorabilia.
Transitioning to Vancouver in 2016, Erlinda met Mike, a devoted hockey enthusiast, reigniting her passion for the sport. Together, they bonded over hockey nights and shared moments watching games, with Mike introducing her to the nuances of the sport. Despite their differing backgrounds and interests, they found common ground in their love for hockey and tennis, embracing each other’s passions.
Their shared experiences at hockey games in Vancouver’s Rogers Arena and tennis tournaments exemplify their mutual respect for each other’s interests. Embracing their differences, Erlinda and Mike celebrate their diverse fandom by proudly wearing jerseys of their respective teams, embodying the motto, “Love conquers all.”
From her initial exposure to hockey during the 2010 Olympics to her present-day immersion in the sport, Erlinda’s journey reflects the profound impact of hockey on her Canadian experience. Beyond being a mere sport, hockey has become a symbol of unity, patriotism, and community, shaping her personal narrative of integration and belonging in Canada.
