Marianne Thompson expressed shock upon learning that one of her cherished artworks had been stolen from a Winnipeg art gallery. The painting, titled “Lady of the Lake,” along with another artwork called “First Snow of the Season” by artist Ida MacKenzie, was taken from Warehouse Artworks in the Exchange District. The theft occurred when thieves broke into the gallery between 5:30 p.m. on Aug. 14 and 5:40 a.m. the following day.
The stolen paintings, with a combined value of nearly $9,000, were confirmed to be missing by Rod Sasaki, the owner of Warehouse Artworks. Thompson’s painting portrays the Grace Anne II, an 85-foot luxury wooden yacht known for its presence on Lake of the Woods. Growing up near the lake, Thompson fondly recalls the Grace Anne II as a significant part of her childhood memories.
Despite the emotional connection to the artwork, Thompson remains puzzled by the theft, questioning the motives behind stealing a piece of art with limited street value. Winnipeg Police Service spokesperson Const. Claude Chancy mentioned that art theft is rare in the city, making it unusual for stolen paintings to surface in local markets.
Thompson hopes for the safe return of her painting or, at the very least, seeks closure by learning about its whereabouts. Anyone with information regarding the theft is urged to contact the major crimes unit at 204-986-6219 or provide anonymous tips through Crime Stoppers at 204-786-8477.
