Longueuil law enforcement has disclosed surveillance footage to aid in identifying a person of interest related to the discovery of a newborn left on a doorstep over the weekend. The Service de police de l’agglomération de Longueuil (SPAL) shared a video showcasing an individual carrying something while strolling along a sidewalk. Jacqueline Pierre, the SPAL spokesperson, mentioned at a press briefing that the person seemed to be holding the infant during the recording.
Authorities believe this person possesses critical information that could assist in locating the baby’s parents. On Sunday, around 11 p.m. ET, an individual rang the doorbell at a residence on Bourgeoys Street before quickly departing. Subsequently, a newborn wrapped in a blanket with the umbilical cord still attached was discovered by the home’s occupants, who promptly contacted emergency services.
The newborn received medical attention from police and paramedics, was transported to a hospital, and is reported to be in good condition. Longueuil police announced on Monday their search for the individual responsible for abandoning the child, expressing their intent to canvass the area for potential surveillance footage that might aid in identifying the parents.
Anyone recognizing the individual in the video is urged to reach out to the authorities. During the press conference, Jacqueline Pierre conveyed a message to the parents, emphasizing the police’s primary focus on their well-being during this challenging period. She emphasized the importance of seeking medical assistance for their physical and mental health.
Mélanie Mercille, another SPAL spokesperson, disclosed that the infant was born prematurely at 34 weeks. Following tips from the public, investigators conducted searches in Marguerite Bourgeoys Park, located near the site where the newborn was found, resulting in the closure of the park to the public on Monday.
