A young man, Ahmed Mustafa Ibrahim, admitted to manslaughter for his involvement in a robbery that led to the death of a bystander near a drug consumption site in the east end two years ago. Ibrahim, 22, confessed to creating a dangerous situation during the robbery, resulting in the tragic killing of Karolina Huebner-Makurat. The incident took place outside the South Riverdale Community Health Centre on Queen Street E. near Carlaw Avenue on July 7, 2023.
The court documents revealed that Ibrahim, along with other drug dealers, operated near the now-closed supervised injection site, where they sold illicit drugs, mainly fentanyl, to the site’s visitors. Ibrahim, known as Ben to the staff, frequented the area and interacted with other individuals, including a drug dealer identified as Damian Hudson, who was involved in the confrontation leading to the shooting.
Hudson had warned Ibrahim of potential retaliation if he was robbed, indicating a readiness to use deadly force. Video evidence obtained during Ibrahim’s trial captured the altercation between the men involved in the incident. The footage showed Ibrahim and Hudson in a confrontation in the courtyard, with a third individual joining in the attack. The situation escalated into a struggle over a satchel, leading to a chase and ultimately resulting in the fatal shooting of Huebner-Makurat, an innocent bystander.
Despite Ibrahim fleeing the scene and a subsequent shootout between the other individuals, he was not armed during the gunfight. Huebner-Makurat, a 44-year-old wife and mother of two, tragically lost her life during the crossfire.
While Ibrahim denied premeditating the robbery, the Crown plans to establish this as an aggravating factor in future court proceedings. Hudson, facing a charge of second-degree murder, is believed to have fired the fatal shot, while another suspect, Ahmed Ali, remains at large with a Canada-wide warrant issued for his arrest. Khalila Mohammed, a former harm reduction worker who received concerning text messages from Hudson, pleaded guilty to being an accessory after the fact in the manslaughter case.
