Canada’s FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup campaign has been dealt a setback as co-captain Emma Reda is sidelined due to an injury sustained during training. The 16-year-old midfielder from Woodbridge, Ont., daughter of former Canadian international Marco Reda, fractured her ulna while attempting a slide tackle to regain possession, as recounted by Canada coach Jen Herst. In Reda’s absence, Ottawa midfielder Felicia Hanisch has been called up as a replacement. This injury compounds the absence of Reese Kay and Joelle Bader, with Kaylee Hunter being promoted to the senior team by AFC Toronto.
Canada, led by co-captains Chloe Taylor and Olivia Chisholm, will face Nigeria in their opening match at the tournament in Morocco. The team is optimistic about their chances, with Herst emphasizing the squad’s speed and technical abilities. The Canadians will also play against Samoa and France in Group D matches.
The top two teams from each group, along with the four best third-place finishers, will advance to the knockout stage. Canada, aiming to progress beyond the group stage, has a history of strong performances in previous editions of the tournament.
Preparations for the competition included participation in various tournaments and qualifiers, with the team showing promising form leading up to the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup. Despite challenges faced in training and acclimatization in Morocco, the team remains united and enthusiastic about the upcoming matches.
Canada’s opponents in the tournament, including defending champions North Korea and strong contenders like Spain and France, present formidable challenges. However, with a talented squad and a resilient spirit, Canada is determined to showcase their best football and strive for a successful campaign in Morocco.
