“Alien Mascots Ray and Hope Spark Dementia Conversations”

Published:

The Alzheimer Society of Thunder Bay has introduced a unique initiative featuring two alien mascots named Ray and Hope to spark conversations about dementia. This campaign aims to raise awareness and funds to combat the disease. These handcrafted wooden alien sculptures, created by artist Terry Bell from Terrace Bay, Ontario, known for his iconic Northern Alien figures, are being placed at various businesses and organizations across the region to garner support and donations for the society’s essential local programs.

Brandi Moore, the society’s marketing and awareness coordinator, highlights that the Ray of Hope business-to-business campaign focuses on three key objectives: increasing awareness, fundraising, and promoting inclusivity. Participating businesses host either Ray or Hope, share photos, commit to becoming dementia-friendly, and assist in fundraising efforts.

The campaign encourages businesses to be innovative in organizing third-party fundraising activities to support the society’s programs and services. Additionally, it promotes the creation of more inclusive communities by urging participating businesses to adopt dementia-friendly practices.

The inspiration behind the Ray of Hope campaign stems from Bell’s collaboration with his father-in-law, who had Alzheimer’s disease. This initiative provided his father-in-law with a meaningful activity that engaged his mind and hands, emphasizing the importance of staying active and purposeful.

Sharon Pitawanakwat, the executive director of the Alzheimer Society of Thunder Bay, emphasizes the organization’s training program designed to help businesses and organizations become dementia-friendly spaces. The training equips employees with valuable knowledge on creating dementia-friendly environments, enhancing customer service, and fostering supportive relationships, ultimately leading to the recognition of these establishments as part of the dementia-friendly community.

Pitawanakwat aims to reduce the stigma associated with Alzheimer’s disease by normalizing discussions and making the condition less intimidating. The campaign strives to make Alzheimer’s a commonly discussed topic, creating a more comfortable environment for individuals to seek help and support. The introduction of a dementia support line further emphasizes the importance of providing a safe space for individuals to express concerns and seek assistance, fostering a sense of acceptance and support within the community.
