“Spotify’s Disco Ball Logo Sparks User Backlash”

Published:

Despite its intention to celebrate the company’s 20th anniversary, Spotify’s temporary replacement of its usual green-and-black app icon with a sparkling 3D disco ball has triggered a wave of backlash from a vocal portion of its user base.

The change, introduced last week, has sparked heated online criticism, drawing comparisons to controversial preferences like pineapple on pizza or the word “moist.” Many users expressed displeasure, labeling the new 3D logo as unattractive or pixelated, with some even calling for the removal of the designer responsible.

While some users threatened to uninstall Spotify due to the logo change, others defended the company against the backlash, condemning critics as “haters” and highlighting a broader trend towards minimalist design.

Notably, social media managers from various brands engaged in the conversation by sharing their own disco ball-inspired logos in support or jest.

In response to concerns raised about readability and branding issues with the temporary logo, Spotify clarified that the change was indeed temporary and tied to their anniversary celebration.

“It’s our birthday, so we’re embracing the party theme with our temporary logo, but we will revert to our usual icon once the celebration concludes,” a company spokesperson confirmed in an online statement.

Recognizing the mixed reactions, Spotify acknowledged that glittery designs may not appeal to everyone and assured users that the original app icon would be reinstated next week after the temporary glow-up phase.
