“Denare Beach Residents Rebuilding After Devastating Wildfire”

Published:

Brittany Holmgren, a long-time resident of Denare Beach, has experienced both the joys and hardships of living in her hometown. In a devastating event last June, a wildfire ravaged through the village in northeast Saskatchewan, resulting in the destruction of Holmgren’s residence and workplace. The aftermath left her and many others in the close-knit community of 700 reeling from the loss.

Following the fire, Holmgren, along with her two young daughters, had to seek temporary refuge with her mother in Flin Flon, Manitoba, as their home was no longer habitable. Complicating matters, her dogs had to stay in her camper in Denare Beach due to accommodation constraints at her mother’s place.

The wildfire not only impacted Holmgren but also affected many others, including Jennifer Hysert, who lost her home and business in the blaze. The community faced the challenge of finding affordable housing amidst a surge in rental prices post-disaster.

In response to the housing crisis, the Saskatchewan Public Safety Agency initiated the placement of temporary trailers in Denare Beach and nearby Creighton to accommodate displaced residents. While some individuals have expressed satisfaction with the temporary housing, others like Holmgren find the options limited and not suitable for their needs.

Local officials, including Village Councillor Karen Thomson, are concerned about the economic repercussions of the disaster, anticipating a decline in tax and utility revenues for the village. They have sought financial support to aid in the recovery process.

The community remains resilient, with a shared determination to rebuild despite the challenges. Residents, like Hysert, are seeking accountability for the handling of the wildfire, emphasizing the need for answers and justice.

As Denare Beach looks towards the future, there is an undercurrent of optimism among residents and officials, believing in the strength of the community to overcome the adversity faced during the wildfire crisis.
