The company managing the Cabot Links and Cliffs golf courses is making another attempt at a potential development that would involve a portion of West Mabou Beach Provincial Park, an area protected by law and previously off-limits for such projects.
During a press briefing at Province House, Natural Resources Minister Tory Rushton disclosed that representatives from the Cape Breton organization have proposed some initiatives to the province. Rushton emphasized the government’s willingness to consider proposals that bring economic benefits, job opportunities, and value to Nova Scotians.
Contrary to their stance two years ago, Rushton and Premier Tim Houston are now open to discussions regarding the development plans. In 2023, when the company expressed interest in securing a Crown land lease to construct a third 18-hole golf course, Rushton discouraged the idea due to legal constraints prohibiting golf course development within the park.
Despite the lack of clarity on the specifics of the current proposal, concerns have been raised by park preservation advocate Nadine Hunt, who expressed disappointment at the potential threat to the park’s protected status. Hunt criticized the company for capitalizing on political circumstances to advance their agenda.
A 2019 study highlighted the ecological significance of the park, identifying rare plant and animal species within its sand dunes and wetlands, some of which are protected under provincial conservation laws.
Amidst the ongoing discussions, Progressive Conservative MLA Kyle MacQuarrie, along with ministerial assistant to Rushton, acknowledged the need to engage with constituents to gauge their perspectives on the matter. MacQuarrie refrained from taking a definitive stance on the issue, emphasizing the importance of listening to community feedback before making decisions.
Former Nova Scotia premier Rodney MacDonald, hired by Cabot for advocacy efforts, has been indirectly involved in the discussions, although specific details of the engagement remain undisclosed.
The evolving situation has sparked concerns among conservationists and residents, underscoring the importance of maintaining the park’s protected status and the government’s commitment to environmental preservation efforts.
