British pop sensation Dua Lipa has taken legal action against Samsung Electronics, seeking a minimum of $15 million in damages. Lipa claims that the tech giant utilized her image without authorization to promote its television sets. The lawsuit asserts that Samsung showcased a copyrighted image of the singer on the packaging of TV boxes for retail sale, creating the impression of her endorsement of the product.
The image in question, titled “Dua Lipa – Backstage at Austin City Limits, 2024,” is owned entirely by Lipa. The lawsuit was filed in a California federal court on Friday. Samsung Electronics declined to provide a statement, citing ongoing legal proceedings. Lipa’s legal representatives have not yet responded to requests for comments on the case.
In addition to claims of copyright and trademark violations, Lipa has accused Samsung Electronics of infringing on her publicity rights. Lipa’s legal team included social media screenshots and comments in the filing, indicating that her image on the TV boxes influenced potential buyers. One screenshot showed a fan expressing intent to purchase the TV solely because of Lipa’s presence on the packaging.
Last year in June, the “Levitating” singer discovered Samsung’s alleged unauthorized use of her image and requested that the company cease and desist. Despite her demands, Samsung reportedly refused to comply. Lipa’s lawyers argue that Samsung’s unauthorized use of her image has negatively impacted her brand identity and commercial reputation by misleading the public into believing she endorses the products.
