Ottawa is eager for Prime Minister Mark Carney to engage with Chinese President Xi Jinping at an upcoming summit in South Korea, as revealed by a high-ranking Canadian government official during a press briefing on Thursday. Carney, emphasizing the necessity of fostering a renewed dialogue with Beijing following strained relations in recent years, is scheduled to attend an APEC summit in Seoul.
Expressing his anticipation of meeting with key Chinese dignitaries within the next month, Carney’s team is optimistic about a potential encounter with President Xi at the APEC summit. Addressing the ongoing trade tensions, China imposed initial anti-dumping duties on Canadian canola imports in August, reciprocating Canada’s imposition of a 100% tariff on Chinese electric vehicle imports a year earlier.
Last Friday, senior officials from Canada and China engaged in discussions regarding the disputes involving canola and electric vehicles. However, there was no immediate indication of a resolution being reached during these talks.
