The upcoming Met Gala in New York is facing criticism and calls for a boycott, despite its reputation as a prominent fashion event and fundraiser for the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute. Scheduled for May 4, this year’s theme, “Costume Art,” aims to showcase fashion as an integral part of art history, with a dress code emphasizing that “Fashion is Art.”
The event, which raised over $31 million last year, will take place in the newly constructed Condé M. Nast Galleries, marking a significant upgrade in venue size. Curated by Andrew Bolton, the exhibition will feature a diverse representation of figures often overlooked in art history, including individuals with large and disabled bodies.
Renowned personalities such as Nicole Kidman, Venus Williams, and Beyoncé will serve as co-chairs for the gala, alongside lead chairperson Anna Wintour. The event will also include a host committee chaired by designer Anthony Vaccarello and filmmaker Zoë Kravitz, with notable names like Sabrina Carpenter and Teyana Taylor in attendance.
However, the inclusion of Amazon’s Jeff Bezos and his wife Lauren Sánchez Bezos as honorary chairs has sparked controversy. The Bezos’ significant financial contribution, a departure from traditional luxury brand sponsorships, has led to protests outside the museum, criticizing the gala for allegedly benefiting from worker exploitation and associating with controversial practices.
The Met Gala’s reputation for opulence and exclusivity has drawn criticism in the past, with individual tickets priced at $100,000 and tables starting at $350,000. New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani’s decision to skip the event due to affordability concerns reflects a growing sentiment of the gala being out of touch with wider societal issues.
As the event approaches, questions arise about its future without the leadership of Anna Wintour, who has been instrumental in shaping the gala’s prominence.
