Founded in 1976 by Canadian record producer Daniel Lanois, along with his brother Bob Lanois and partner Bob Doidge, the studio is situated in a converted 1918 Edwardian-style residence on Grant Ave. near Main St. E. Throughout the years, Grant Avenue Studio has attracted top talent from both Canada and around the globe.
In 2023, Mike Bruce, Debbie Bruce, and Marco Mondano acquired the studio, describing it as a living museum with a rich history spanning five decades. Jamie Tennant, a music enthusiast and program director at CFMU, McMaster University’s radio station, views the studio as a dynamic entity that has gained momentum over the years. The studio’s appeal lies in its historical significance, having welcomed renowned artists like Gordon Lightfoot, Johnny Cash, and Brian Eno.
Despite minimal updates since its establishment in the 1970s and ’80s, Grant Avenue Studio retains its unique charm, including peculiar features like window wells filled with sand for soundproofing. Bruce highlights the diverse range of talents that have recorded at the studio, from opera singers to indie artists, emphasizing the studio’s role as a hub of creativity.
To commemorate its 50th anniversary, Grant Avenue Studio plans to continue its “Grant Avenue Studio Presents” series, showcasing local artists in intimate YouTube concerts. The studio’s vintage MCI JH-500C console, similar to the one used for iconic albums like “Hotel California” and “Back in Black,” adds to its allure for musicians seeking a piece of music history.
With a lineup of special events scheduled, including an anniversary celebration, museum exhibition, and a music contest, Grant Avenue Studio is poised to honor its legacy and contributions to the music industry.
