Taylor Kirk, the creative force behind the musical project Timber Timbre, has passed away at the age of 44. A spokesperson for Kirk confirmed the sudden demise on April 14 to CBC Music. Expressing deep sorrow, the representative stated, “We are heartbroken by the loss of Taylor, and his music will remain a cherished legacy that we can hold onto forever.”
Kirk established Timber Timbre in 2005, introducing his unique folk-noir style to the world with the release of the debut album “Medicinals” in 2007. The third self-titled album of Timber Timbre was nominated for the 2009 Polaris Music Prize, while the subsequent album “Creep on Creepin’ On” in 2011 made it to the prize’s shortlist.
Timber Timbre’s music found its way into various films and TV series, including notable placements in productions like “Breaking Bad,” “Russian Doll,” and Sarah Polley’s “Stories We Tell.” NPR Music, describing Timber Timbre as led by the enigmatic Taylor Kirk, praised the band’s hauntingly beautiful and atmospheric songs, likening them to eerie whispers from a mysterious forest.
The intimate Tiny Desk performance by Timber Timbre in 2014 featured captivating renditions of tracks like “Run From Me” and “Grand Canyon.” Kirk’s most recent album under Timber Timbre, “Lovage,” released in 2023, marked his seventh studio album, showcasing his continued musical evolution and artistry.
