“Indigenous Man’s Remains Repatriated After Decades”

Published:

After years of separation due to the Indian residential school system, Percy Onabigon’s remains have been repatriated to Long Lake #58 First Nation, where he was finally laid to rest. Following his time at St. Joseph’s Indian Residential School in Thunder Bay, Percy, who suffered from epilepsy and partial paralysis, was moved to various institutions. Despite the family’s struggle to locate him, Percy’s niece, Claire Onabigon, discovered his burial site in Woodstock, Ont., where he had passed away at 27 due to tuberculosis.

The repatriation ceremony, held just before the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation on Sept. 30, was a poignant event that brought closure to Percy’s family and community. The emotional gathering included a pipe ceremony, speeches, and prayers, where Percy was honored and remembered for his life. His casket, adorned with orange ribbons bearing his siblings’ names, was laid to rest in Long Lake’s cemetery, with loved ones placing tobacco on his grave as a final gesture of respect.

Claire’s tireless efforts to secure funding for Percy’s repatriation were supported by various community leaders, including the Ontario government, which contributed $45,000 towards the cause. The journey to bring Percy home spanned over 1,800 kilometers, from Woodstock to Long Lake #58, where he was finally reunited with his family and ancestors.

The story of Percy Onabigon sheds light on the challenges faced by Indigenous families seeking to repatriate their lost loved ones. The need for comprehensive legislation and funding to support such initiatives has been emphasized by experts and community leaders. The hope is that Percy’s repatriation sets a precedent for others and paves the way for smoother processes in the future. Despite the hurdles encountered, Claire’s determination and the family’s perseverance serve as an inspiration, echoing the message of never losing hope in the pursuit of justice and closure.
