Prince Andrew announced his decision on Friday to relinquish his title as Duke of York amid ongoing scrutiny over his conduct and associations with the late Jeffrey Epstein. In a statement, Andrew expressed that the persistent allegations against him were detracting from the responsibilities of his older brother King Charles and the broader activities of the British Royal Family. He reiterated his commitment to prioritizing his obligations to his family and nation, reaffirming his withdrawal from public duties made five years ago.
With the approval of the King, Andrew disclosed his choice to cease using the title and honors bestowed upon him, while vehemently refuting the accusations leveled against him. This resolution to forgo his titles was reached after consultations with senior royals, with the King reportedly pleased with the outcome. Despite relinquishing his titles, as the son of the late Queen Elizabeth, Andrew retains his status as a prince and remains eighth in line to the throne.
The decision to relinquish his titles comes amidst ongoing controversies surrounding Andrew. In 2022, he settled a legal dispute with Virginia Giuffre, who accused him of sexual misconduct when she was a minor. Despite Andrew’s denial of these allegations, they resurfaced recently with the upcoming publication of Giuffre’s memoir. In the book, Giuffre claimed that Andrew, driven by a sense of entitlement, believed he had the right to engage in sexual relations with her.
Royal biographer Robert Hardman highlighted the persistent nature of the controversies surrounding Andrew, prompting both the palace and the prince to agree on a further distancing from his royal duties. Andrew’s proactive stance in relinquishing titles is seen as an attempt to restore his dignity in the face of ongoing scrutiny.
While Andrew had previously renounced his title of “His Royal Highness,” he will continue to reside at Royal Lodge within the Windsor Castle estate. However, he will no longer participate in the annual royal Christmas gatherings at Sandringham. His daughters, Princesses Beatrice and Eugenie, will remain unaffected by his decision, but his former wife Sarah Ferguson will no longer be recognized as the Duchess of York.
In addition to the Epstein controversy, Andrew’s business dealings have also posed challenges. Court documents revealed his association with a Chinese businessman who had been banned from the UK for national security reasons, raising further questions about his judgment and connections.
The British Royal Family has experienced a reduction in active members in recent years, with Prince Harry and Meghan Markle also stepping back from official royal duties. While Andrew’s titles will be inactive rather than revoked, historian Anthony Seldon noted the significance of this decision, as it marks a rare occurrence of a senior royal voluntarily relinquishing a dukedom in over a century.
