Renowned fashion model Paul Mason, also known as Fashion Santa, made his debut appearance in Newfoundland by strutting the runway at Gander International Airport. Mason, who introduced the stylish persona of Fashion Santa in 2016, visited the province for the unveiling of a new exhibit on Fogo Island, showcasing an impressive 11-foot portrait of himself crafted by visual artist Bruce Pashak.
Sporting a custom-made summer Santa suit by Thomas Henry during this season, Mason revealed that he travels with a collection of 11 distinct red outfits in a hockey bag. His signature style includes various velvet ensembles with different cuts, such as double-breasted or single-breasted options, always paired with a waistcoat for a sleek and tailored look.
The inception of Fashion Santa stemmed from a challenging period in Mason’s life when he returned to Toronto after his mother’s cancer diagnosis and subsequent passing. His decision to grow a large white beard led to the creation of Fashion Santa, which garnered widespread attention in the fashion industry and went viral after pitching the concept to retailers.
With a substantial social media following of over 82,000 followers, Mason is often approached for selfies, recalling a memorable moment when Justin Bieber offered him selfie-taking advice. Reflecting on his illustrious career, Mason highlighted closing Jean Paul Gaultier’s final show in 2020 as a significant achievement, considering it an honor to conclude the renowned designer’s influential reign in fashion.
Embracing the charitable essence of the iconic Santa Claus figure, Mason actively supports charitable causes, serving as a representative for organizations like Save a Child’s Heart and engaging with local charities during his travels. His portrait, painted by artist Bruce Pashak, is currently on display at JK Contemporary gallery in Joe Batt’s Arm, Fogo Island, until October 13.
Ryan Keefe, co-owner and director at JK Contemporary, expressed his delight in showcasing Mason’s portrait alongside the work of local artist Bruce Pashak, emphasizing the profound connection between the two artists. The exhibition, “New Works by Bruce Pashak,” offers a unique artistic collaboration that Keefe believes everyone should experience firsthand.
