A man, aged 58, who was involved in a confrontation with Windsor police on Thursday afternoon has passed away, according to Ontario’s Special Investigations Unit (SIU). The SIU, responsible for probing incidents involving police, stated that the man, who was armed with a gun and had discharged his weapon previously, was shot by officers.
Preliminary information from the SIU revealed that around 2:45 p.m. ET on Thursday, the man indicated to the police that he intended to harm himself. When officers arrived at the scene in the Remington Park area on Stanley Street and Lillian Avenue, they located the man in the backyard of a residence.
The SIU reported that the man aimed his firearm at the officers and then retreated into his home. Despite attempts to negotiate with him, the man, still armed, exited the house. Subsequently, three officers discharged their firearms, resulting in the man sustaining serious injuries. He was transported to the hospital by ambulance, where he succumbed to his injuries on Saturday morning.
The SIU has appointed three subject officials and three witness officials for the case, with five investigators and three forensic investigators assigned to the investigation. The SIU is encouraging individuals with any relevant information, including videos or photos, to reach out to the lead investigator at 1-800-787-8529.
