“Bison Return: Hope, Heritage, and Healing in Star Blanket”

Published:

In Star Blanket Cree Nation, community members experienced a significant event as they witnessed the return of bison to their lands. The community, located approximately 100 kilometers northeast of Regina, came together over the snowy May long weekend to welcome the new bison herd and commemorate this historic occasion.

Sharon Strongarm, who attended the bison release with her grandchildren, expressed the emotional impact of seeing the bison arrive from a ranch in Alberta and take their first steps onto the land. She described the moment as spiritually significant, emphasizing the symbolic return of the buffalo to their community.

The late grandfather of Ariane Starblanket, a former chief of Star Blanket, had envisioned reintroducing bison to the community as a means of healing and promoting food sovereignty. Starblanket, serving as the community navigator and project manager for the bison release, highlighted the legacy of her grandfather’s dream and the positive impact it would have on the community.

The project, initially part of community safety plan initiatives, evolved to involve youth in caring for the bison to ensure their active participation. Starblanket emphasized the importance of cultural restoration, historical revitalization, and environmental stewardship through the reintroduction of the bison.

Tristan Starr-Desnomie, one of the selected bison keepers, expressed his honor in being chosen for this role and shared his excitement about caring for the community’s bison herd. He acknowledged the responsibility that comes with looking after these majestic animals and highlighted the unique experience it would bring.

Looking ahead, the community aims to expand the bison’s habitat and eventually utilize them as a source of food, clothing, and medicine. For now, the bison serve as an educational resource, with hopes of empowering future generations by educating them about the cultural significance of the buffalo.

The return of bison to Star Blanket Cree Nation marks a significant milestone in preserving heritage, fostering community involvement, and promoting sustainability for the benefit of present and future generations.
