The 55th annual Juno Awards continued with its second night on Sunday, featuring electrifying performances by Rush, The Beaches, Daniel Caesar, Cameron Whitcomb, and more. The Beaches secured the group of the year accolade for the third time, while Daniel Caesar claimed the contemporary R&B recording of the year for his work, “Son of Spergy.” Cameron Whitcomb received the breakthrough artist of the year award, and bbno$ won the fan choice category.
The banquet held on Saturday saw the distribution of the majority of the approximately 50 award categories. Tate McRae, from Alberta, stood out among the winners with a remarkable six awards. McRae, who already had 17 Juno nominations, clinched victories in categories such as artist of the year and single of the year for “Greedy.”
This year, McRae added six more nominations to her list, securing four wins already, including artist, single (“Sports Car”), pop album, and album (“So Close to What”) of the year. Notably, the only award she missed out on Saturday was for songwriter of the year, which was won by Daniel Caesar. The fan choice award went to Vancouver rapper bbno$.
Despite her impressive victories, McRae did not attend the Saturday ceremonies. The Sunday awards included titles such as fan choice, breakthrough artist or group of the year, group of the year, and contemporary R&B recording of the year.
In a touching moment, Hamilton’s Raquel McIntosh was honored with the MusiCounts teacher of the year award. The night featured soul-stirring performances, including William Prince’s rendition of “For the First Time” and an emotional tribute to Joni Mitchell, who received a lifetime achievement award from Prime Minister Mark Carney.
Nelly Furtado was celebrated with an induction into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame, highlighted by a special tribute that included a virtual appearance by Drake. Moreover, Billy Talent received a prestigious humanitarian award on Saturday, while Daniel Caesar was honored with the international achievement award on Sunday.
