“Autonomous Sail Drones Enhance Great Lakes Surveillance”

Published:

Two autonomous sail drones in bright orange hue are currently afloat on Lake Erie as part of a novel U.S. Coast Guard initiative. Launched in May for the first time in the Great Lakes region, these drones are outfitted with 360-degree cameras. The U.S. Coast Guard has highlighted their diverse functionalities, including aiding in search and rescue missions, responding to environmental spills, and supporting law enforcement operations.

The 360-degree cameras on the drones are under constant surveillance by U.S. Coast Guard personnel, who have the capability to manually adjust the drones as needed. It is emphasized that the footage captured is not recorded, as per officials. Lt. Junior Grade Samuel Rodriguez Garcia of the U.S. Coast Guard clarified that the drones are primarily deployed for situational awareness purposes, acting as mobile cameras to provide real-time insights into ongoing activities.

Both U.S. and Canadian agencies, including law enforcement entities, may access the drone technology following appropriate protocols, as mentioned by Garcia. One of the primary roles of the drones, according to Garcia, is to help in border security efforts and combat cross-border criminal activities. While the Canadian Coast Guard has confirmed no direct involvement in the U.S. sail drone program, they underscore the close cooperation between the two agencies.

The collaboration between the Canadian Coast Guard and the U.S. Coast Guard is vital for upholding maritime security priorities and ensuring effective coordination across government levels, as stated by Craig Macartney, the Canadian Coast Guard spokesperson. The sail drones, operating within U.S. waters in the Great Lakes, are designed with collision avoidance technology to navigate away from vessels. Boaters are advised to maintain a distance of approximately 100 meters from the sail drones as a precautionary measure.

Part of the Great Lakes marine security operation, involving various law enforcement agencies at different governmental levels, the sail drones are withdrawn from the water when ice formation begins, marking the conclusion of this seasonal initiative.
