“One Battle After Another” Dominates 2026 Oscars, Wins Best Picture and Six Awards

The film “One Battle After Another” emerged as the top winner at the latest Academy Awards, securing the coveted best picture Oscar along with an impressive five additional accolades. Initially, “Sinners,” directed by Ryan Coogler, had dominated the nominations with a record-breaking 16 nods and ended up victorious in four categories.

Michael B. Jordan, the lead in “Sinners,” claimed his first-ever best actor award to a standing ovation. Meanwhile, Jessie Buckley’s portrayal as William Shakespeare’s wife in “Hamnet” earned her the best actress recognition after a successful run during the 2026 award season.

Amy Madigan clinched the best supporting actress title for her role in “Weapons,” while Sean Penn secured the supporting actor Oscar for “One Battle After Another,” marking his third Academy Award win. Additionally, Paul Thomas Anderson achieved his first-ever wins for best adapted screenplay and directing through “One Battle After Another,” which also triumphed in the editing and casting categories.

“Sinners” took home four awards, including Ryan Coogler’s win for best original screenplay and Autumn Durald Arkapaw’s historic victory for best cinematography as the first racially diverse woman to claim the honor. “Frankenstein,” shot in Toronto, also shined with three well-deserved wins.

The 98th Academy Awards ceremony, hosted by Conan O’Brien, saw a night of triumph for numerous Canadians. Maggie Kang from Toronto accepted the best animated feature Oscar for “KPop Demon Hunters,” while production designers Tamara Deverell and Shane Vieau from Nova Scotia celebrated their wins for “Frankenstein.” Montreal filmmakers Chris Lavis and Maciek Szczerbowski also secured the best animated short film award for “The Girl Who Cried Pearls.”

Other notable winners included Kate Hawley for costume design in “Frankenstein,” Mike Hill, Jordan Samuel, and Cliona Furey for makeup and hairstyling in the same film, and Ludwig Goransson for original score in “Sinners.” The event also recognized exceptional talents in various categories such as sound, visual effects, and documentary features.

The 2026 Oscars highlighted a diverse array of cinematic achievements, showcasing outstanding talent and creativity across the film industry.
