“Victoria’s Unique Little Free Libraries Thrive”

Published:

In various locations throughout Greater Victoria, Bruce More’s unique structures catch the eye of passersby – could that be a half kayak, a miniature barn, or an old-style outhouse? However, upon closer inspection, these creations reveal themselves as small free libraries, community-run book exchange boxes that have gained popularity since their inception in 2008.

The Greater Victoria Placemaking Network (GVPN) now boasts over 1,000 registered little free libraries, skillfully crafted by More and fellow community members. Through the commitment and creativity of volunteers, readers, and builders, the number of new book boxes has been steadily increasing by more than 100 annually since 2017.

As the enthusiasm for these mini libraries grows, so does their diversity. There are specialized little free libraries for games, plants, crafting materials, pet supplies, and even genre-specific book collections carefully curated for readers.

Andrew Wynn-Williams manages a fantasy-themed little free library in the Gorge-Tillicum area of Saanich, where regular visitors, including city employees and school children, frequent the spot. Saanich Councilor Teale Phelps Bondaroff has been instrumental in spearheading the establishment and maintenance of these local libraries.

The appeal of these small free libraries lies in their interactive nature, inviting people to engage with them. Phelps Bondaroff notes that the project has gained momentum on its own, drawing people in with its charming and engaging presence in the community.

More, an 82-year-old retired music professor turned woodworker, has been pivotal in crafting these book boxes from repurposed materials. His dedication to community-building has been recognized through awards, emphasizing his passion for projects that bring people together.

To celebrate the milestone of the thousandth little free library, the GVPN will host a festival featuring live music, interactive library displays, and an auction of book boxes created by More and another local builder, with proceeds benefiting the Victoria Literacy Connection.

Despite nearing his 100th little library, More remains optimistic about the enduring popularity of these community initiatives. He continues to be surprised by the ongoing enthusiasm and support for these little free libraries year after year.
