Netflix has officially announced the development of a sequel to the immensely popular film “KPop Demon Hunters,” which holds the record as the most-watched movie on the platform. The sequel will continue the creative partnership between Netflix and co-directors Maggie Kang and Chris Appelhans under a new exclusive multi-year deal for animation projects.
Maggie Kang, a Korean filmmaker with roots in Toronto, expressed her pride in the audience’s desire for more of the Korean story and characters. The sequel aims to expand on the world created in the original musical film, which follows the K-pop girl trio Huntrix as they navigate their dual lives as demon hunters and music stars. The movie’s standout track, “Golden,” performed by EJAE, Audrey Nuna, and Rei Ami, topped the Billboard Hot 100 charts.
The first installment of “KPop Demon Hunters” received critical acclaim and multiple awards, including Best Animated Feature and Best Song at the Critics Choice Awards and the Golden Globes. Additionally, the film earned two Oscar nominations for Best Animated Feature and Best Original Song. The song “Golden” also received a Grammy for Best Song Written for Visual Media, marking the first Grammy win for a K-pop track.
Netflix reported record-breaking viewership numbers for the film, with 482 million views and 32 million views for its lyric videos within a six-month period. The film’s soundtrack continues to gain global popularity.
Chris Appelhans emphasized the importance of a clear creative vision for the sequel, stating that a strong emotional connection to the content is crucial for its success. The team is dedicated to delivering a sequel that resonates with both fans and new audiences alike.
