Canada Affirms Commitment to Global Peace and Multilateralism

Published:

Canada’s commitment to engaging with the complexities of the global landscape was emphasized by Foreign Affairs Minister Anita Anand during her address to the United Nations General Assembly. Anand asserted that Canada remains steadfast in its support for multilateral institutions, even in the face of challenges, emphasizing the importance of shared prosperity, collective security, and lasting peace. She also expressed Canada’s desire to play a constructive role in facilitating peace between Israel and Palestine.

Anand affirmed Canada’s backing for regional partners working towards a ceasefire and political solutions in the Israel-Hamas conflict. She highlighted Canada’s willingness to actively participate in these efforts. This message coincided with reports of a peace plan proposed by U.S. President Donald Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to end the Israel-Hamas conflict.

In discussions with Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Anand shared Canada’s commitment to contributing to peace processes globally. She indicated collaboration on key issues such as resolving Haiti’s gang crisis, promoting peace in Ukraine, and advocating for the exclusion of Hamas from future governance in Palestine.

The Minister’s remarks followed Prime Minister Mark Carney’s acknowledgment of Canada’s potential role in post-war Gaza security efforts. Anand addressed the UN on Canada’s behalf in place of Carney, who had a scheduling conflict. She outlined Canada’s foreign policy priorities, focusing on defense cooperation, economic resilience, and upholding core values such as human rights and environmental protection.

Anand underscored the significance of international agreements in fostering global stability and prosperity. She defended the importance of multilateralism and highlighted the need to balance economic priorities with fundamental values, including gender equality and Indigenous rights. The Minister also referenced challenges facing the United Nations, including financial constraints and calls for greater representation from developing nations.

In closing, Anand paid tribute to outgoing UN Ambassador Bob Rae for his dedicated service to Canada and his contributions to multilateral diplomacy. Rae will be succeeded by former justice minister David Lametti, with his tenure set to begin in mid-November.
