Israel and Hamas have agreed to the initial phase of a Gaza peace deal put forth by the United States, as announced by U.S. President Donald Trump on Wednesday. This agreement, if enforced, would represent a significant step forward in efforts to end a conflict that has escalated into a broader regional crisis involving countries like Iran, Yemen, and Lebanon, reshaping the landscape of the Middle East.
President Trump shared on social media that the deal will result in the prompt release of all Israeli hostages. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu expressed optimism about the development, vowing to bring all hostages back home, deeming it a momentous occasion for Israel. The Israeli government is set to convene to approve the ceasefire agreement.
A senior White House official, speaking on condition of anonymity, disclosed that once the deal receives the green light, Israeli forces will start pulling back to the agreed boundary within 24 hours. Subsequently, Hamas will have 72 hours to release the hostages, beginning on Monday, according to the official.
The announcement comes on the heels of the two-year anniversary of the Hamas-led attacks on Israel in 2023, which triggered a prolonged conflict in Gaza resulting in significant casualties. Hamas has called on Trump and other guarantor states to ensure full compliance with the ceasefire terms.
Netanyahu and Trump engaged in a phone conversation following the deal’s announcement. The successful completion of the agreement would mark a major diplomatic milestone for Trump, who had pledged to swiftly resolve conflicts in Gaza and Ukraine upon taking office.
Various parties, including the United Nations and the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation, have expressed support for the deal, hoping it will lead to improved conditions for Gazans. Trump’s proposal includes provisions for an immediate ceasefire, exchange of hostages, staged Israeli withdrawal from Gaza, Hamas disarmament, and the establishment of a transitional government under international supervision.
However, challenges remain, particularly concerning Hamas’ disarmament and the creation of a clear path to a Palestinian state. Previous ceasefire attempts have faltered due to these unresolved issues. Nonetheless, the current agreement presents a potential breakthrough in the longstanding conflict between Israel and Hamas.
