“Israel and Hamas Reach Historic Peace Deal with U.S. Brokered Plan”

Published:

Prime Minister Mark Carney expressed his optimism as Israel and Hamas reached an agreement on a U.S.-brokered peace plan for Gaza. The deal includes the release of Israeli hostages and aims to halt hostilities. Carney emphasized the importance of Hamas fulfilling its part of the agreement by releasing all hostages, living and deceased, held since the October 7, 2023 attack on Israel.

Carney highlighted the critical nature of the next 48 hours during a press briefing on Parliament Hill. The agreement, orchestrated under pressure from U.S. President Donald Trump and Arab mediators, involves some form of ceasefire to end the two-year conflict. Carney commended Trump for his leadership, which facilitated the breakthrough in negotiations.

Acknowledging the contributions of Jared Kushner, Steve Witkoff, and other key figures, Carney mentioned the essential roles played by Qatar, Egypt, and Turkey in reaching this milestone. He hinted at a potential role for Canada in the upcoming phases of the peace process.

Foreign Affairs Minister Anita Anand emphasized the urgency of securing the hostages’ release as the first step towards sustaining the peace plan. Anand revealed that Canada is collaborating with the U.S. on a 20-point peace initiative that includes immediate aid to Gaza upon agreement by both parties.

Anand disclosed Canada’s substantial commitment of $340 million for humanitarian aid in Gaza, positioning Canada as a significant supporter of the peace efforts. Discussions are ongoing regarding Canada’s potential involvement in a transnational force to maintain peace in Gaza, with considerations being made about the availability of military resources.

Carney and Anand highlighted the importance of continued cooperation and support to ensure the success of the peace plan and the establishment of lasting peace in the region.
