Canadian Sprinter Marissa Papaconstantinou Wins Bronze at Para Athletics Worlds

Published:

Marissa Papaconstantinou remained focused and claimed a bronze medal at the Para athletics world championships in India despite a lengthy bus journey to the stadium caused by heavy traffic. Qualifying third in her heat earlier in the day, the Canadian sprinter finished third in the women’s 100-meter T64 final, crossing the line in 13.06 seconds.

This marked Canada’s second medal at the championships, following wheelchair racer Austin Smeenk’s bronze in the men’s 400 T34 final earlier in the week. Papaconstantinou had previously earned bronze in the same event at the 2023 worlds and the Paralympics in Tokyo four years ago.

Following a chaotic two-hour bus ride through heavy traffic, Papaconstantinou hurriedly prepared for her race upon arrival at Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, quickly putting on her running blade. Despite the challenging circumstances, she expressed satisfaction with her podium finish, acknowledging the race wasn’t perfect.

The competition saw only two sprinters, including the world record holder, outpace Papaconstantinou. Fleur Jong of the Netherlands clinched gold with a time of 12.29 seconds, followed by her compatriot Marlene van Gansewinkel in second place with a time of 12.86 seconds.

In July, Jong had set a new championship mark in the heats, breaking her teammate’s record. Papaconstantinou also improved her Canadian record during the national track and field championships in Ottawa, clocking 12.84 seconds.

Looking ahead, Papaconstantinou is gearing up for the women’s 200 T64 event on the final day of competition. With her eyes set on the 2028 Paralympics in Los Angeles, she reflects on her journey from childhood sports to Para athletics, where she found her true passion and potential.

The Para athletics action continues with Canadian athletes striving for podium finishes in various events, showcasing their determination and skill on the international stage.
