“Ward 8 Byelection Voters: Prepare for Delays Amid Strike”

Published:

Voters participating in the Ward 8 byelection at Mohawk College on Monday may encounter delays due to an ongoing support workers’ strike. However, the city of Hamilton assures alternative voting options are available for those reluctant to cross picket lines.

According to a city announcement released on Thursday, despite potential picket lines, the polling station will remain accessible during the disruption. In addition, eligible voters can choose to cast their ballots at any of the following alternative locations:

– St. Charles Education, Mountain Location, 150 East 5th St.
– Westmount Recreation Centre, 35 Lynbrook Dr.
– Dave Andreychuk Mountain Arena, 25 Hester St.
– Courtyard Marriott, 1224 Upper James St.

All mentioned locations will have accessible voting machines for voters’ convenience.

The Ward 8 byelection aims to fill the vacancy left by former councillor John Paul Danko, who transitioned to a role in Parliament earlier this year. This election features a record-breaking 26 candidates, marking the largest candidate pool in Hamilton’s municipal history.

Advance polls will be open over the weekend, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on both Saturday and Sunday. On Election Day, scheduled for Monday, polls will operate from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.

Individuals without a fixed address can vote by completing a declaration of identity form at any polling location. Notably, HSR transit buses will not access the college premises or the Mohawk College Terminal. Riders are advised to disembark on adjacent main streets. Further details can be found on the HSR Detours webpage.

The strike by full-time support staff from the Ontario Public Service Employees Union began last Thursday, emphasizing the need for increased job security following significant layoffs and program closures at the college.
