“India’s New High Commissioner in Canada Building Bilateral Ties”

Published:

India’s recently appointed high commissioner to Canada commenced his duties officially on Wednesday during a ceremony held at Rideau Hall in Ottawa, subsequent to a series of notable visits by Canadian dignitaries. Vina Nadjibulla from the Asia Pacific Foundation highlighted India’s keen interest in reestablishing the bilateral relationship and emphasized the necessity of rebuilding mutual trust and addressing national security concerns.

Among the six newly appointed envoys who presented their credentials to Governor General Mary Simon at Rideau Hall was India’s new High Commissioner, Dinesh Patnaik. During the ceremony, Simon acknowledged the evolving nature of diplomacy while underscoring the enduring significance of fostering dialogue to establish or mend relationships between nations.

The relationship between Canada and India has faced strains following Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s assertion in the House of Commons that there was credible evidence linking New Delhi to the assassination of a Sikh activist in June 2023 near Vancouver. Tensions escalated in October 2024 when the RCMP implicated the highest levels of the Indian government in a campaign targeting Canadians with violence and intimidation.

In response to these developments, Canada expelled six Indian diplomats, reciprocated by India, marking a low point in the diplomatic ties. However, a positive shift occurred in June when Prime Minister Mark Carney invited Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi to the G7 summit in Alberta, leading to an agreement to restore the top diplomats of both countries.

Deputy Minister David Morrison of Global Affairs Canada recently visited New Delhi for preliminary consultations with senior Indian officials, signaling a potential reactivation of dialogue mechanisms between the two nations post the previous political crisis. The discussions also hinted at the restoration of Canada’s full diplomatic staff in India, a critical priority for Canada following the downgrading of diplomatic protections for Canadian envoys in 2023.

Foreign Affairs Minister Anita Anand is slated to visit India in the upcoming weeks, further underscoring efforts to strengthen and normalize the diplomatic relationship between the two countries.
