“Israel Faces Backlash Over Intercepted Gaza Aid Flotilla”

Published:

Israel faced international backlash and demonstrations on Thursday following its interception of nearly 40 aid-carrying boats bound for Gaza, detaining over 450 foreign activists, including prominent Swedish campaigner Greta Thunberg. Live camera feeds confirmed by Reuters captured Israeli soldiers boarding the vessels, with passengers seen in life vests holding their hands up.

Thunberg, renowned for her environmental activism, was shown in an Israeli Foreign Ministry video surrounded by armed soldiers after her ship was seized. In a pre-recorded message, she stated she was taken against her will during a non-violent humanitarian mission adhering to international law.

Protests erupted in various cities worldwide, condemning Israel’s actions in intercepting the activists as part of its ongoing Gaza campaign. While most boats were stopped, one vessel, the Marinette, continued its journey towards Gaza, as confirmed by flotilla organizers.

The Israeli Foreign Ministry assured that all detained individuals were safe and healthy, with plans to bring them ashore at Ashdod. The ministry warned that any further attempts to breach the blockade would also be prevented.

Among the detained were Canadians aboard the Conscience vessel, part of the Freedom Flotilla Coalition heading towards Gaza. The coalition, carrying aid, medics, and journalists, aimed to shed light on Israel’s targeting of essential workers in Gaza.

South Africa’s President Cyril Ramaphosa criticized Israel’s actions, emphasizing the need for global solidarity to alleviate suffering in Gaza. The flotilla, consisting of over 40 ships carrying aid and activists, symbolizes opposition to Israel’s blockade of Gaza.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan condemned Israel’s aggression towards the flotilla, stating it undermines peace efforts. Hamas denounced the interception as a criminal act, urging public condemnation of Israel’s actions.

The flotilla’s attempt to reach Gaza drew international attention, with nations like Turkey, Spain, and Italy monitoring the situation. Past attempts to break the blockade have led to confrontations, including the 2010 incident where nine activists were killed.

Israel’s naval blockade of Gaza, in effect since 2007, has sparked numerous aid delivery attempts by sea. The recent interception of the flotilla adds to the ongoing tensions between Israel and Gaza, with both sides facing criticism for their actions.
