Three Coquitlam RCMP officers are facing potential dismissal following allegations of engaging in racist, sexist, and derogatory conversations in group chats. Constable Philip Dick expressed his regret during a recent code-of-conduct hearing in Richmond, British Columbia, acknowledging his use of dark humor to relieve job-related stress but admitting that he had crossed the line into vulgarity. The controversial messages included derogatory remarks about a Mexican sexual assault victim and other racially insensitive language. Dick emphasized his remorse and self-disappointment, stating that upon reflection, he found it hard to believe he had made those statements. The hearing originated from a complaint by Constable Sam Sodhi in 2021, accusing Dick, along with Constables Ian Solven and Mersad Mesbah, of engaging in discreditable conduct by making offensive comments in a Signal group chat and on police data terminals. Dick refuted some of the accusations but admitted to handling stress and negative emotions in an immature and regrettable manner.
