British Columbia Coast Cleared of Tsunami Threat

Published:

Provincial authorities have confirmed that British Columbia’s coast is not under any tsunami threat following a 7.8-magnitude earthquake near Russia’s Kamchatka Peninsula in the Pacific Basin. Initially, a tsunami advisory was issued for the Aleutian Islands and Amchitka Pass off Alaska’s coast earlier on Thursday. The earthquake occurred approximately 410 kilometers southwest of Bering Island, Russia, at 11:58 a.m. PT. EmergencyInfoBC has stated that as of 1:08 p.m. PT, there is no danger to B.C.’s coastline. This event follows a previous tsunami advisory for much of the B.C. coast about seven weeks ago, triggered by an 8.8-magnitude earthquake in the same region off Russia, which was one of the most powerful earthquakes recorded since 1900.
