“Task Force Combats Extortion and Shootings in B.C.”

Published:

A new task force has been established in British Columbia to address the increasing incidents of extortion threats and shootings aimed at the South Asian community. The initiative, spearheaded by the B.C. RCMP, will comprise 40 personnel from various law enforcement agencies. Additionally, a sum of $300,000 from the federal gun and gang action fund will be allocated to local law enforcement for extortion probes and to Crime Stoppers for an awareness campaign on extortion.

Nina Krieger, the Minister of Public Safety and Solicitor General, emphasized the importance of halting these crimes, stating that no individual, family, or business in the province should face such threats. The Surrey Police Service is currently investigating 45 extortion threats and 27 associated shootings within the city this year.

B.C. RCMP’s Assistant Commissioner John Brewer disclosed that multiple search warrants have been executed in recent weeks, resulting in over six arrests. Charge recommendations stemming from investigations are being reviewed by Crown counsel. Brewer highlighted the collaborative effort of the task force in safeguarding communities and pursuing those accountable for the violence and intimidation.

Surrey Mayor Brenda Locke unveiled a $250,000 reward fund to incentivize individuals providing information leading to successful extortion convictions in the city. In a separate development, Gurdeep Shergill from Delta, B.C., was charged with extortion and two counts of shooting with intent in connection to incidents in Brampton, Ontario.

Notably, the RCMP has associated the India-based Lawrence Bishnoi gang with extortion threats in the South Asian community, prompting calls, including from B.C. Premier David Eby, to classify the gang as a terrorist organization.

Surrey Police Staff Sgt. Lindsey Houghton expressed concerns about the reluctance of individuals holding vital information to come forward. Efforts are being made to encourage cooperation and support victims of extortion through available helplines and assistance programs.

The task force’s formation underscores the collective determination to combat extortion and violence, ensuring the safety and security of all residents in British Columbia.
