Canada’s Nicholas Bennett and Arianna Hunsicker secured bronze medals at the Para swimming world championships held in Singapore. Bennett, hailing from Parksville, B.C., clinched bronze in the men’s 200-meter freestyle S14 event during the opening night. Despite narrowly missing his national record by 0.36 seconds, Bennett expressed contentment with his performance, acknowledging the fierce competition from Great Britain’s William Ellard and Brazil’s Gabriel Bandeira.

Bennett highlighted the significance of the competitive environment in improving his skills, emphasizing the motivation derived from his rivals. His bronze medal achievement marked his third consecutive podium finish in the same event, a feat previously accomplished by only one other Canadian male Para swimmer, Benoit Huot.

On the other hand, Hunsicker, representing Surrey, B.C., secured a bronze medal in the women’s 50-meter freestyle S10 category. Finishing behind Turkey’s Defne Kurt and Italy’s Alessia Scortechini, Hunsicker expressed overwhelming joy at her unexpected success, considering it as one of her happiest moments.

The Para swimming world championships will continue until September 27, showcasing outstanding performances from para-athletes worldwide. Viewers can catch the live coverage of the event on CBCSports.ca and CBC Gem, with the competition resuming on Sunday at 9 p.m. ET.
